Tiny utility says no, or at least not yet, to two suitors

When tiny Readsboro, population 785, put the town electric department up for sale, both of Vermont’s two major investor-owned power companies submitted bids. But Readsboro is playing hard to get.

The Select Board in the town on the Massachusetts line had been looking for a year for a buyer to take over the system and make needed upgrades.

Board member Charlotte Clark says the board couldn’t decide between a $200,000 offer by Green Mountain Power Corp. and a $167,000 deal proposed by Central Vermont Public Service Corp.

Town voters would have to approve such a sale. Officials say they hope they can find a buyer in time to put the matter to voters at the annual Town Meeting in March.
