The town of Tinmouth will switch to Australian ballot voting for town meeting.

At a special town meeting yesterday, voters decided to do away with the town’s 22-year tradition of open-floor meetings in favor of paper ballots.

The vote was prompted by a petition that sought to increase voter participation on town issues.

Advocates also say the system allows for absentee voting and the privacy of votes.

About 200 people, more than half the registered voters, attended the special town meeting yesterday afternoon.
