Thunderstorms rake Vermont, downing trees

A band of thunderstorms that descended on northern Vermont yesterday left plenty of damage in their wake.

The National Weather Service posted a tornado watch for the state through 6 o’clock  last night, and while there were reports of twisters in Vermont, none have been confirmed.

Vermont Emergency Management spokesman Mark Bosma says downed trees have caused road closures in Alburgh and Williston, and hail and gusty winds were also reported in Williston. Trees were also down in Sheldon, St. Albans and Highgate.

The storms knocked out power to about 11,000 homes and businesses served by Central Vermont Public Service, and about 2,100 others served by Washington Electric Co-Op were also left in the dark yesterday because of downed lines caused by high winds.
