A Springfield school is expected to reopen today after officials say an acetylene torch caught fire in a school maintenance room and caused a three-alarm fire in Springfield on Friday.

The blaze was limited to the maintenance room where it began and no one was seriously hurt.

Deputy Fire Chief Scott Richardson says students and teachers were away for winter break when the fire broke out at the Riverside Middle School late Friday morning.

Richardson says about 35 firefighters converged on the scene from Vermont and New Hampshire.

Richardson says damage was minimal and limited to a maintenance room where the incident began, and school is expected to open as normal today.
