Thirty years ago, Congress created a new program to identify and pay for the cleanup of hazardous waste sites.  Since 1980 the Superfund program has been involved in the remediation of tens of thousands of such sites around the country.

Today, the six New England states have 115 toxic and hazardous waste sites on the Superfund National Priority List.  Fourteen of them are in Vermont. The sins of the industrial age are what the Superfund program aims to scrub clean.

Chuck Schwer works within the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation as Section Chief of the state’s Hazardous Waste Site Cleanup program.  Martha Judy is a Vermont Law School Professor who specializes in Superfund legal cases.  They spoke with VPR’s Jane Lindholm about how the program works.
