With over a foot of ice on southern Lake Champlain, clusters of shanties have gathered underneath the Champlain Bridge in West Addison, as they do every year when the ice is thick enough. The fisherman and women inside these shanties are hoping to catch smelt and perch.
VPR’s Melody Bodette recently visited a few shanties to hear the stories and sounds of ice fishing, starting with the sound of a handheld ice auger.
