In the new novel, “The Fifth Season,” an ex-Boston detective returns to his Vermont hometown, where he takes the position of town constable. Just as Hector Bellevance finds the tranquility he was looking for, a pair of murders rocks the town. The lead suspect is the town’s road commissioner, who has disappeared. But the actual identity of the killer remains a mystery even Hector is under suspicion.
