Tea party activists rallying in Vermont say they want government downsized and taxes lowered.

About 60 sign-waving people held a peaceful lunchtime protest in front of the Statehouse in Montpelier yesterday.

"Socialism Destroys Freedom," ”It’s Right to Vote Out the Left" and "Don’t Tread On Me," were among the messages.

The event was staged on April 15 to coincide with the deadline for filing income tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service. Similar events were being held in at least a half-dozen states.

Jody Blackburn, of Paintsville, Kentucky, was visiting Vermont and went online to find out where she could participate in a rally. Standing outside the Statehouse, she held a sign saying "High Taxes and High Spending is Tyranny."
