Tapping Backyard Maples

Don’t be put off by professional sugaring operations with their miles of tubing, vacuum systems and big collection tanks. You can sugar right in your own backyard, provided you have access to a maple tree or two.

All you need to know how to do is drill a hole, hang a sap bucket and stand back and listen to the sweet music of the dripping sap.

In Hartland, Rick Read and his daughter Sydney have been backyard sugaring for the last few years.

VPR’s Steve Zind joined them just as they were getting ready for the season.
