Officials say 775 acres of Taconic Mountain forest land will be protected near the town of Arlington.

The U.S. Forest Service and The Conservation Fund announced yesterday that the Spruce Peak tract will be incorporated into the Green Mountain National Forest.

They say the popular area for hunting, hiking, fishing and wildlife viewing contains some of the highest quality northern hardwood forests in Vermont.

Officials say the property and the adjacent public lands lie in roughly 16,000 acres of forest on the New York border.

They say Congress, with support from Vermont’s congressional delegation, appropriated $471,000 so the Forest Service could acquire the land from The Conservation Fund.
