Symington hits Douglas on budget

Gaye Symington says incumbent Republican Gov. Jim Douglas needs to level with Vermonters about long-term budget trends and come up with solutions to growing shortfalls in the state’s finances.

The Democratic gubernatorial candidate made the comments in a statement issued by her campaign on the eve of a meeting between lawmakers and administration officials at which they plan to detail plans for $24 million in cuts to the state’s general fund budget and $8 million in cuts to the transportation fund.

Symington says a series of piecemeal cuts won’t suffice, and that the state needs to develop longer-term solutions to its fiscal problems.

A Douglas aide counters that Symington hasn’t offered any comprehensive solutions, either.
