A Swanton cheese maker will receive a $750,000 state grant to modernize a former cheese factory.

The community development grant will be loaned to Via Cheese by the town of Swanton to renovate the former Lucille Farms Inc. plant.

Via Cheese, which produces mozzarella, provolone, and other products, started operating at the former Lucille Farms factory in October 2006, a year after Lucille Farms closed.

The agency of Commerce and Community Development says the company will use the funding for repairs and upgrades to increase energy efficiency and bring the plant into compliance with the Vermont Department of Agriculture and USDA inspection standards.
