Suspects in two murder cases try to fire lawyers

The suspects in two Chittenden County murder cases want to fire their lawyers, possibly delaying their upcoming trials.

Brian Rooney, who’s charged with killing University of Vermont student Michelle Gardner-Quinn in October 2006, claims he has not been allowed to actively participate in his defense.

Essex shooting suspect Christopher Williams says his lawyers have not communicated with him.

Jury selection is scheduled to start May 13 for Rooney and at the end of June for Williams, who is charged with killing two teachers in August 2006.

Margaret Jansch, Williams’ lead attorney, declined to comment before an April 14 hearing.

A gag order has been issued in the Rooney case, barring lawyers from commenting publicly about the case.
