A lawsuit filed by fired Winooski City Manager Joshua Handverger has been moved from county to federal court.

In the suit Handverger is seeking reinstatement and back pay. The suite also alleges that the City Council violated Handverger’s civil rights by firing him on Sept. 30 and denying him a proper hearing.

Handverger was spending the day out of state with family celebrating Rosh Hashanah.

Handverger spent a stormy year as Winooski City manager culminating in city department heads writing a letter demanding that he resign or be fired.

The department heads said he was hard to work with, didn’t communicate well and mishandled the city’s finances.
