Study recommends changes to law enforcement

A report prepared for the Legislature has recommended changes to law enforcement in Vermont.

The study, which was prepared by consultants and cost about $150,000, suggested ways to streamline inefficiencies such as unnecessary administration and overlapping of agencies. It also recommended that the Department of Liquor Control, game wardens, the enforcement section of the Department of Motor Vehicles and the Vermont State Police be consolidated under the Department of Public Safety.

It addressed towns that do not have police forces, saying they need to work with neighboring municipalities and rely less on state police for minor problems and more on constables.

Thomas Tremblay, Vermont’s Public Safety commissioner, said the report should be reviewed carefully and says his agency is open to the recommendations.
