As interest in local food grows, some meat producers have said a lack of slaughterhouse facilities is holding back their ability to expand.

But a new regional study from New England shows that existing slaughter facilities are not being used at the same rate throughout the year.

The study found that the bottleneck was actual caused by processing.

Chelsea Bardot Lewis is the Agricultural Development Coordinator for the Agency of Agriculture she says demand for slaughterhouses is seasonal.

The Agency of Agriculture has grants available for processors that are interested in scaling up production in their facilities, including custom facilities. You can find a link to more information here.
