High school students from ten schools around the state were in Montpelier today to match their public speaking skills against one another.

The Vermont Public Forum Debate State Tournament was held at the Statehouse, with debaters taking on the topic of casino gambling and its benefits and drawbacks.

More than 50 students competed in the annual event, held in legislative chambers and committee rooms on the Legislature’s day off.

The students paired off against counterparts from other schools in demonstrating their reasoning skill, public speaking ability and poise as they debated in front of judges.

The winning team was Kyla Ose and Dan Liebman of the Champlain Valley Union High School.
