(Host) A Brattleboro Union High School student was killed and another critically injured in a car crash in Guilford last night (Tuesday).

VPR’s Susan Keese has more.

(Keese) Brattleboro Union High School Principal Jim Day says students are grieving for one classmate and praying for the recovery of another.

(Day) “These two students, who were involved in the accident, have a lot of friends at Brattleboro Union High School. Well before school opened this morning these friends have been grieving, comforting each other, meeting with small groups, meeting with staff, you know, wanting to talk to one another. It’s really evident how much these two young women meant to so much of our student body.”

(Keese) Sixteen-year-old Stella Levanis was fatally injured when her Jeep Cherokee went out of control and rolled several times.

The other girl in the car was sixteen-year-old India Martin, who is well known at the school for her activism on racial issues. She was listed in fair condition following surgery at Bay State Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Day, the Brattleboro Principal, says the high school library was set aside as a place for students to meet with counselors and friends.

State police say both girls were wearing seat belts, when they were thrown from their vehicle. The accident is still under investigation.

For Vermont Public Radio, I’m Susan Keese.
