SPRINGFIELD, Vt. (AP) _ The lockdown of the Southern State Correctional Facility caused by an outbreak of strep throat has been lifted. Vermont Corrections Commissioner Rob Hofmann says the lockdown was lifted on Friday. More than 75 inmates at the 350-bed prison contracted strep in the last week. The unusual health-related lockdown was imposed to slow the spread of the illness. A number of prison staff got sick as well. None of the infected inmates or staff were seriously ill. Hofmann praised the prison staff and the Health Department for the quick and decisive action that contained the outbreak.
