Strafford woman named Teacher of the Year

A Strafford elementary school teacher is Vermont’s teacher of the year.

Diana Leddy has been a teacher at the Newton School since 1983. She was awarded a $5,000 grant by Hannaford Brothers for classroom materials.

Leddy says that after 27 years, being a teacher still challenges and fascinates her.

Leddy has been an advocate for statewide literacy, helped develop benchmarks for writing and standards-based curricula in reading, writing, science and social studies.

She also coordinated a collaborative project between her school, the Strafford Historical Society and Dartmouth College to preserve the history of the Elizabeth Copper Mine and to educate the public about the Environmental Protection Agency’s cleanup of the site.
