Stowe Voters Reject Ice Rink Plan

Voters in Stowe say they don’t want to spend $6.5 million on a new ice rink.

In a Town Meeting Day vote yesterday, a proposal to issue bonds in that amount to pay for a replacement for Jackson Arena was narrowly rejected. The vote was 733 against the plan and 684 for it.

Supporters say building a new rink would help spur business by attracting hockey tournaments and visitors to downtown Stowe, which has a population of about 5,000 people.

Critics said the plan would benefit mainly users of the rink, and they argued those people should be the ones helping to pay the cost, not town taxpayers.
