A 43-year-old Stowe man is in Alaska preparing to participate in his first Iditarod dog sled race.

Bruce Linton, a former environmental scientist for the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources is a diabetic and is using his participation in part to raise funds for two organizations working to address diabetes.

Linton is a New York City native who came to Vermont in 1994 and later started a dog sledding business in Stowe.

Linton says he’s always wanted to run the 1,150-milie race across Alaska.

He says he wants to show people with diabetes that they can do just about anything if they properly take care of themselves, lead a healthy, active lifestyle and have a positive attitude.
