Stowe looking to add to fire dept. ranks

Stowe Fire Chief Mark Sgantas is recruiting new members for the fire department.

Sgantas says he is looking for men, women and teens to follow the same calling that made his become a volunteer firefighter 26 years ago.

He says the department needs 45 members and a chief to fill its roster. The department now has 36 members, a chief and six junior firefighters.

A shortage of emergency volunteers is a common problem in rural parts of New England.

Postcards were sent last month to every homeowner in Stowe detailing opportunities to volunteer at the fire station.

Sgantas says he is looking to let people know about the department and get them involved.
