Hundreds of Vermont schools were closed Friday as a winter storm blanketed the state with snow.

The storm is being blamed for a multiple-vehicle crash and a series of other crashes on Interstate 89 in Bolton and South Burlington.

Northern Vermont is expected to get 6 to 12 inches of snow by Saturday morning while central and southeastern parts of the state could get up to 20 inches.

One Vermont ski area that relies primarily on natural snow expects the storm to dump enough for it to reopen the mountain this weekend.

A Mad River Glen spokesman says nearly 6 inches of snow had fallen by early Friday afternoon at the Fayston ski area and a foot and half was possible.
