There will be a taste of history at the Statehouse tonight: A re-enactment of the 1861 special legislative session that started the state’s response to the Civil War.

Vermont political leaders, dressed in full 19th-century dress, will join a host of others to re-enact the special session of the Legislature called by Gov. Erastus Fairbanks, when President Abraham Lincoln called for states to offer money and troops to support the war effort.

The pageantry begins at 7:30 and will include Vermont musicians Pete Sutherland, Patti Casey and Colin McCaffrey as they perform traditional songs from the Civil War era.
