The state Department of Health is urging that all Vermonters between ages 6 months and 24 be vaccinated against the H1N1 flu virus.

Health Commissioner Dr. Wendy Davis says that unlike traditional influenza outbreaks, young people appear to be more susceptible to complications from the new flu strain.

In addition to young people, the Health Department is recommending the vaccine for pregnant women and caregivers for children under six months of age.

People between 25 and 64 should be vaccinated if they are at high risk for flu complications.

Davis says traditional seasonal flu vaccine is available now. The H1N1 vaccine is due to arrive in mid-October.

The Health Department is working with schools to set up vaccination clinics.
