State Unemployment Rate Holds Steady

Vermont’s unemployment rate held steady at 3.5 percent last month. The national unemployment rate for June was 5.6 percent.

The state Department of Employment and Training says summer hiring wasn’t as high as expected this year. Department economist Michael Griffin says the tourism industry appears to have created fewer jobs this year. Griffin says construction hiring also appears to be a little lower than it was last year.

The lowest unemployment in Vermont was in the Hartford area, at 1.6 percent and the highest unemployment in Vermont was in Newport, at 5.9 percent.
