State To Remove Dam

The Vermont Department of Natural Resources says crews are going to remove a small dam from the Winooski River, in Marshfield. Environmental officials say removing the dam will encourage the movement of trout and other aquatic species.

Officials say the concrete dam near Marshfield village was built in 1965 and it no longer serves a useful purpose. The removal of the dam will restore the river’s continuity between Plainfield and Lower Cabot. The move will also eliminate any risk to public safety posed by the deteriorating structure.

Preliminary work in the river will take place next week. The removal is scheduled to begin the following week. The project should be completed by mid-September. Officials caution that the weather could change the schedule.
