A Vermont State Police trooper facing domestic assault charges has resigned.

Police say 32-year-old Trooper Timothy Newton, of Sandgate, submitted his resignation on Friday.

Newton was charged with domestic abuse arising from an off-duty incident Feb. 6 in which he is accused of punching his girlfriend in the nose after a Super Bowl party. He had been on paid leave.

Newton pleaded not guilty.

Court papers say the 4-year-old daughter of Newton’s girlfriend said her mother was punched, and a large amount of blood was found in the bedroom.

Newton’s attorney tells the Burlington Free Press his client is looking to be cleared of the criminal charges at trial.
