Vermont State Police say a burglary suspect who swung a golf club at police was shot in the hand by police.

Police were investigating a burglary in process Monday when they found 40-year-old Charles Cantin, of Burlington, inside a residence, wielding a golf club.

Maj. Thomas L’Esperance says police ordered Cantin to drop the golf club but he refused, and that he later swung it at a trooper after pepper spray was used to try to subdue him.

Vermont State Police Sgt. Steven McNamara fired two shots, hitting Cantin once in the hand. Cantin, who was treated for non-life threatening injuries, is charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, burglary and unlawful mischief.
