State Police Explore Merging Two Barracks

The Vermont State Police could study the possibility of merging the Shaftsbury and Rutland barracks into one facility.

The Bennington Banner says the Capital Bill recommended by the administration of Gov. Jim Douglas contains a request for $10,000 to study the possible merger.

Capt. Donald Patch, who commands the area, says the idea has been suggested before, but never approved.

A similar study led to plans to merge barracks in Rockingham and Brattleboro into a single facility in Westminster.

Patch says approving a consolidation would require finding a location with good radio and cellular telephone coverage.

He says even if the study were to be approved now, it would be several years before construction could begin.
