State looks into Social Security number web post error

State officials are still trying to clean up an error in which hundreds of doctors, therapists and other health providers had their Social Security numbers inadvertently posted to a state Web site.

The list was posted as an attachment to the state’s requests for proposals by companies seeking to administer health insurance claims by state employees.

The posting has raised concerns about the possibility of identity theft, though state officials say they’ve had no word of that actually occurring.

The state set up a special toll-free number for providers to call for advice on how to avoid becoming a victim of identity theft.
