Vermont’s congressional delegation is calling on President Bush to speed up a disaster declaration for seven counties in the state. Senators Jim Jeffords and Patrick Leahy and Congressman Bernie Sanders sent a letter to the president Thursday.

They said that Addison, Caledonia, Chittenden, Franklin, Lamoille, Orleans and Windham counties have been damaged by flooding that began August 12. That flooding continues as the remnants of Hurricane Frances pass through the region.

The delegation’s letter follows Governor Jim Douglas’ similar request to the president for disaster assistance. Damage is estimated to exceed $1.8 million.
