State Representative Greg Clark was killed in an accident on US Route 7 in Waltham Friday morning.

Clark represented a district made up of the towns of Addison, Ferrisburgh, Panton, Waltham and Vergennes. He was a Republican, and was re-elected this month to a fifth term.

When the legislature is not in session, Clark taught social studies at Mount Abraham Union High School.

He served the district along with Representative Diane Lanpher.

She says just yesterday the two were meeting with retired Addison County teachers when Clark joked with the group that he was looking forward to joining their ranks. Lanpher says it was that kind of humor that Clark will be remembered for.

"He was a good guy, he was a funny man," Lanpher says. "Greg shares a warmth within the community of being a really, really funny guy."

Lanpher says whenever he spoke on the House floor, Clark was always on topic, but always gave the room a laugh.

Lanpher is a Democrat and said that didn’t stand in the way of their friendship.

"We often didn’t have the same view of particular policies, but even if we didn’t have the same vote, we would compliment each other on a job well done," Lanpher says.

Clark also formerly served as city councilor and deputy mayor of Vergennes.

House Speaker Shap Smith and Senate President John Campbell released statements praising Clark’s dedication to the state.

Governor Peter Shumlin said he was deeply saddened to hear of Clark’s death and that his heart goes out to Clark’s family.
