State issues air quality alert through today

State officials are warning that the continued muggy weather will pose a potential hazard to old people, the very young and anyone with respiratory ailments.

The Vermont Agency of Natural Resources says levels of particulate matter – pollution particles that can get into lungs – are up.

Richard Valentinetti, director of air pollution control for the state ANR, says much of New England is having an air pollution alert.

What’s more, locally generated pollution is lingering, causing the National Weather Service in Burlington to issue an alert warning the elderly, young and those with asthma or emphysema to stay indoors and avoid excessive exercise.

A cold front expected today is expected to cool things off and bring rain that will help people breathe a little easier.
