State is owner of some unclaimed money

The Vermont state treasurer’s office has been putting the word out this year about unclaimed property from bank accounts and utility refunds. But, it turns out some of that money belongs to state agencies.

The state Transportation Agency has $60 in three unclaimed amounts. That’s not enough to build a new highway bridge, but agency spokesman John Zicconi says every little bit helps.

Some agencies are identified as the owners of money, but say they’re actually holding it for individual residents.

Finance and Management Commissioner Jim Reardon says the Tax Department is listed as the owner of a range of amounts of money that actually belong to taxpayers.
