State officials say the Vermont State Hospital may not be ready to regain its federal certification by January.

Mental Health Commissioner Susan
Besio says January is still the goal for correcting deficiencies found in recent federal inspections of the Waterbury facility. But she says officials also are being realistic and aiming to get the problems fixed by January, or as soon thereafter as possible.

The federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid decertified the hospital last month, costing the state lost up to $700,000 a year in federal funding.
