A new law ensures that no Vermont woman with health insurance will ever have to pay more than $25 to get a mammogram.
On Tuesday, Gov. Jim Douglas signed into law a measure that closes a loophole that meant some women with health insurance still had to pay up to $300 for the breast cancer screening procedure.
The maximum cost is a $25 deductible.
Mammography is a critical tool in detecting breast cancer. Experts recommend that women over 40 get a mammogram once a year.
Douglas says the law makes mammograms more accessible to Vermont women.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Vermont women. Lung cancer is first.
