The Douglas administration says it hopes improved economic times will allow it to hire another lobbyist to represent Vermont’s interests in Washington.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Governor Jim Douglas says the state is abandoning plans to award a new contract for a Washington lobbyist.

Spokesman Jason Gibbs says letters have been sent to the three firms bidding to represent the state to tell them no contract will be awarded.

In September the administration was criticized by some for not putting out to bid a contract awarded to a company called Dutko Worldwide.

Gibbs says Dutko has served the state well.

Dutko has helped the state with human services issues.
