The state of Vermont is closing two Interstate 91 rest areas in Windsor County amid complaints about drug use and sexual activity.

Vermont State Police Lt. Rick Hopkins says the unstaffed rest areas were plagued by discarded hypodermic needles and drug paraphernalia and unwanted solicitations for sex.

He says a lot of people who were traveling through the area and stopped for legitimate reasons were being exposed to the activities.

State officials say the rest stops were closed Dec. 1, although they’ll continue to be used for truck inspections.
