Vermont State Archivist Gregory Sanford will receive the Matthew Lyon Award for his lifetime commitment to the First Amendment and the public’s right to know the truth in Vermont.

The Vermont Press Association is scheduled to present the award to Sanford during its annual awards banquet at noon Thursday at the Capitol Plaza in Montpelier.

VPA President Bethany Dunbar is editor of The Chronicle in Barton. She says Sanford has been a leader in the efforts for open access to public records and management of records so citizens can find out how government operates.

Lyon was at the center of an early free-speech case in the United States, when he was jailed in 1798 under the Alien and Sedition Act for a letter to the editor he wrote criticizing President John Adams.
