A new cancer treatment center for residents of the upper Connecticut River Valley is one step closer to reality. The Vermont Public Oversight Commission voted unanimously yesterday to recommend approval of the proposed North Country Oncology Center.

The center is planned for Saint Johnsbury. It would be a partnership between the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, and six smaller hospitals in the two states.

The next step is to get approval from the Vermont commissioner of Health Care Administration, John Crowley.

Ninety-six percent of the region’s cancer patients drive to Dartmouth-Hitchcock for treatment.
