Officials say thieves broke into a Salvation Army store in St. Albans causing thousands of dollars of damage and making off with clothing and electronic items.

Salvation Army spokesman Chuck Bongiorno says the thieves pounded the cash register and credit card machine with hammers, smashed glass cases and shelves holding glassware and broke clothing racks. No money was in the building at the time.

He says the thieves got in by breaking a window in the back of the building in Thursday.

Damages and loss are estimated at between $5,000 to $10,000.
