The speaker of the Vermont House wants to set up a panel to oversee the state’s spending of hundreds of millions of dollars in federal stimulus money.

The panel would be made up of one person each from the Vermont House, the state Senate and the governor’s administration, and would provide quarterly reports available to the public on how the money is being used.

Speaker Shap Smith says Vermont is expected to get between $880 million and $940 million in federal stimulus money.

He says Vermonters want accountability, to be sure the money’s spent as intended. Smith says he will ask the panel to evaluate stimulus projects based on how they help to create and keep jobs, and stimulate the economy.
