Some taxpayers get a second chance at tax prebates

State officials say a new law gives some Vermonters who missed out on property tax rebates a second chance at filing for them.

Under it, homeowners who didn’t successfully complete their 2007 applications for the “prebates” can file new ones if certain criteria are met.

The extension applies only in towns that send out tax bills after the September 4th prebate filing deadline.

Bennington Town Clerk Timothy Corcoran says several people in his town didn’t get their prebates because they missed a filing deadline or improperly filled out forms.

Vermont Tax Commissioner Thomas Pelham says the new law will help only those who filed incomplete or incorrect applications, not those who didn’t file. Pelham says  number of people eligible to re-file is relatively small, according to Pelham, and the number of people who will actually receive a prebate even smaller.
