The Society for Protection of New Hampshire Forests says it’s cutting some programs and eliminating some staff positions.

President Jane Difley says like other institutions, the group’s endowment and invested assets have shrunk.

Six full-time and two part-time positions are being cut; another five unfilled positions were cut or filled with existing staff. A total of 48 people worked full or part-time for the Forest Society prior to the layoffs.

Among the programs trimmed is the Center for Land Conservation Assistance, which since 2001 has worked to provide support for those seeking to conserve land in the state.

Founded in 1901, the society is the state’s largest and oldest land trust.
