A Vermont family whose young son was hospitalized with salmonella poisoning after eating peanut butter crackers has filed suit against a Georgia company to which tainted peanuts were traced.

Seven-year-old Christopher Meunier, of South Burlington, took ill Nov. 25, a day after eating Keebler Cheese & Peanut Butter Sandwich crackers.

His mother, Gabrielle Meunier, says he spent six days in the hospital and has since recovered. The family filed a lawsuit against the Peanut Corporation of America in a federal court in Georgia.

Patsy Kelso, acting state epidemiologist for the Vermont Department of Health, wouldn’t confirm that the boy is among the four confirmed Vermont cases, citing patient confidentiality.

The outbreak has killed at least six people and sickened more than 470 others in 43 states.
