Snowmobile season sees few fatalities this year

The snowy winter this season is contributing to one of the best snowmobile seasons Vermont has seen in years.

And so far this season there have been two snowmobile fatalities in the state, the same as recent years when there was little snow.

Vermont State Police Lt. Dan Begiebing says any deaths are too many, but he considers the state lucky to have only had two.

In Maine, nine snowmobilers have been killed since the beginning of January, five since Friday. In that state, the Wardens’ Service is promising to spend more time patrolling snowmobile trails.

Begiebing says all the Vermont fatalities were preventable. He says they were all caused by operator error.
