A slate of candidates for state office who want Vermont to secede from the United States will be unveiled Friday in Montpelier.
The "Vermont Independence Day" slate – consisting of gubernatorial candidate Dennis P. Steele, of Derby, lieutenant governor candidate Peter Garritano, of Shelburne, and a handful of state Senate contenders – will announce their candidacies in a 2 p.m. news conference at the Capitol Plaza.
In addition to secession, the candidates want to return Vermont National Guard troops from Iraq and Afghanistan.
