Four skiers from Pennsylvania are being billed more than $4,100 apiece for the cost of rescuing them after they got lost in the backcountry near Killington. Vermont State Police sent the bills to the men because authorities determined they were negligent.

State police say the men went out of bounds on skis and snowboards at Killington Resort during hazardous conditions without preparations for an extended stay in the cold. The four spent 30 hours in the woods at a time when temperatures fell to 20 below zero. They were found when a helicopter spotted a campfire they started. More than three dozen people participated in the rescue operation.
